In order to provide an academic response to the search for the causes of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), the Central American Program of Health, Environment and Work (SALTRA) organized the "First International Workshop of Research on the Epidemic of Mesoamerican Nephropathy" in November 2012, with the participation of 52 researchers from 15 countries. The workshop resulted in three important products for scientific advancement in this topic:
1.The publication of a Technical Report summarizing the state of art of the hypotheses about the causes and specific recommendations for the design of coordinated scientific research in the region.
2. The signing of a Declaration of the participating researchers.
3.The creation of a consortium of researchers to facilitate collaboration among scientists conducting research on the topic.

Con el fin de brindar una respuesta académica a la búsqueda de las causas de esta enfermedad, El Programa Salud, Trabajo y Ambiente (SALTRA) organizó el "Primer Taller Internacional de Investigación sobre la Epidemia de la Nefropatía Mesoamericana" en noviembre del 2012, con la participación de 52 investigadores de 15 países. El Taller resultó en tres productos importantes para el avance científico en este tema:
1. La publicación de un Informe Técnico resumiendo el estado del arte de las hipótesis sobre las causas y recomendaciones concretas para el diseño de investigación científica coordinada en la Región.
2. La firma de una Declaración de los investigadores participantes.
3. La formación de un consorcio de investigadores para facilitar la colaboración entre los científicos realizando investigación en el tema.
Three years after the first workshop, the Central American Program for Work, Environment and Health (SALTRA) and the Central American Institute for Studies on Toxic Substances (IRET), organized the “Second International Workshop on the Epidemic of Mesoamerican Nephropathy (MeN)”, which was held in San José, Costa Rica, on November 18-20, 2015. A total of 75 experts from 18 countries discussed the evidence regarding possible causes of MeN, pathophysiologic pathways, and similarities and differences with other epidemics of CKDu in Sri Lanka and other parts of the world. The workshop concluded that Mesoamerican Nephropathy has a predominantly occupational component, which is demonstrated and discussed in the Technical Report.

Tres años después del primer Taller, el Programa de Salud, Trabajo y Ambiente de Centroamérica (SALTRA) y el Instituto Regional de Estudios sobre Sustancias Tóxicas (IRET), organizó el “Segundo Taller Internacional sobre la Epidemia de la Nefropatía Mesoamericana”, llevada a cabo en San José, Costa Rica, del 18 al 20 de noviembre, 2015. Un total de 75 expertos de 18 países discutieron la evidencia relacionada a las posibles causas de la Nefropatía Mesoamericana, las vías fisiopatológicas, y las similitudes y diferencias con otras epidemias de ERCu, en Sri Lanka y otras partes del mundo. El Taller concluyó que la Nefropatía Mesoamericana tiene un componente predominantemente ocupacional, lo cual se demuestra y discute en el Informe Técnico.

The Third International Workshop on Chronic Kidney Diseases of Uncertain/Non-traditional Etiology in Mesoamerica and Other Regions was held in San José, Costa Rica March 20-22, 2019, with the participation of 137 participants from 15 countries. The meeting was hosted by SALTRA-IRET of the National University and represented a collaboration between CENCAM, NIEHS, NIDDK, PAHO and SEARO. Workshop participants included specialists from diverse backgrounds including nephrology, epidemiology, occupational health, environmental health, toxicology, nephropathology, anthropology, and exposure assessment.

El Tercer Taller Internacional sobre Enfermedad Renal Crónica de Etiologías Desconocidas/No Tradicionales en Mesoamérica y Otras Regiones se celebró en San José, Costa Rica del 20 al 22 de marzo de 2019, con la participación de 137 participantes de 15 países. La reunión fue hospedada por SALTRA-IRET de la Universidad Nacional y representó una colaboración entre IRET, SALTRA, CENCAM, NIEHS, NIDDK, OPS y SEARO. Los participantes del taller incluyeron especialistas de diversos orígenes, como nefrología, epidemiología, salud ocupacional, salud ambiental, toxicología, nefropatología, antropología y evaluación de la exposición.
