Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is an illness affecting the kidneys, that if not identified and treated in early stages, requires transplant or dialysis to save the lives of patients. During the last 20 years, in several regions of Central America, there has been an increase of a new type of CKD that is not linked with diabetes, obesity, hypertension, or age. This disease is referred to as “Chronic Kidney Disease of non-traditional origin” (CKDnT), CKD of “unknown causes” (CKDu) or the “Mesoamerican Nephropathy” when it occurs in this part of the world. Those most affected by Mesoamerican Nephropathy are young men that live near the Pacific coast, who do physically strenuous works in hot climates. CKDu has been responsible for over 20,000 deaths in Central America in recent years. Finding the causes and responding to the needs of patients affected by this disease has been declared a priority by COMISCA (The Health Ministers of Central America and the Dominican Republic and PAHO (http://iris.paho.org/xmlui/handle/123456789/4401) on an international level.

La enfermedad renal crónica (ERC) es una enfermedad que afecta los riñones, que al no ser identificada y tratada en las primeras etapas, requiere trasplante o diálisis para salvar la vida de los pacientes. Durante los últimos 20 años, en varias regiones de Centroamérica, se ha observado un incremento acelerado de un nuevo tipo de ERC que no está vinculado con la diabetes, la obesidad, la hipertensión ni la edad. Esta enfermedad es conocida como "enfermedad renal crónica con origen no-tradicional" (ERCnT), la ERC "de causas no conocidas" (ERCu por sus siglas en inglés) o "Nefropatía Mesoamericana", cuando ocurre en esta parte del mundo. Los más afectados por la Nefropatía Mesoamericana son hombres jóvenes que viven cerca de la costa Pacífica y quienes laboran en trabajos físicamente extenuantes en climas calientes. La ERCu ha sido responsable de más de 20,000 de muertes en los últimos años en Centroamérica. El encontrar las causas y responder a las necesidades de los pacientes afectados por esta enfermedad, ha sido declarado prioridad por COMISCA (Consejo de Ministros de Salud de Centroamérica y República Dominicana) y la OPS (http://iris.paho.org/xmlui/handle/123456789/4401) a nivel internacional.
